ART 3RS grants aim to support innovative ideas by young scientists for the development and testing of Replacement, Reduction and/or Refinement approaches in animal research.

The grant proposals are evaluated by an independent jury and grants of up to 5.000 € will be awarded for one-year 3Rs projects starting in 2022. The deadline for submitting proposals is November 1^st 2021.

The following conditions apply:

• The submitted projects should focus on the development and/or testing of novel Replacement, Reduction, or Refinement approaches for animal use in scientific research and/or education. Special consideration will be given to projects that further more than one of the 3Rs (e.g. Refinement and Reduction)
• Applicants must have completed their PhD less than 8 years before the application deadline on November 1^st 2021 (i.e. not before September 2013), but there is NO biological age limit for PhDs. Applicants without PhD (i.e. BSc or MSc) are also welcome to submit an application if they are maximally 35 years of age by November 1^st
• Applicants may be of any nationality and employed by a research or teaching institution.
• Funding is available to cover expenses directly linked to the proposed research project including, but not limited to, equipment, animals, consumables, transport, and travel expenses. The budget cannot include institutional overheads. In exceptional and well justified cases an exception can be granted for an overhead of maximal 10% as part of the budget. Salaries or stipends are not part of the eligible costs. However, travel and subsistence costs for up to three months working visits to another group in another country can be requested as part of the regular  budget, if duly justified. The maximum allowance for travel and subsistence costs is 2500€.
• Animal Research Tomorrow requires full compliance with the 3Rs, and use of the highest animal welfare standards. All research involving animals must be approved by an ethics committee or equivalent local regulatory body. Proof of the request for a license or a copy of a valid license for the proposed project must be submitted as part of the application procedure.
• Animal Research Tomorrow grant awards must be acknowledged in all media (e.g. websites, videos, posters, presentations) and publications resulting from the project supported by an ART 3Rs research grant.
• It is the responsibility of the applicant/project leader to respect and abide by all local, national land/or EU laws and regulations relevant to perform the research proposed. The applicant has to obtain all necessary permissions and licences before the grant can be started. ART is in no case legally, financially or otherwise responsible for any expenditures or liabilities arising during execution of the project.
• A project report covering its execution, results and conclusions, and detailing total project costs must be submitted no later than 3 months after completion of the project.
• Payments will be made in Euros to the institution of the project leader. A first instalment of half of the award granted will be transferred at the beginning of the project and the second instalment will be paid after submission of an interim report.
• Any change concerning the project, budget or grant agreement must be communicated in writing for approval by Animal Research Tomorrow.
• The results of ART 3Rs research grant projects must be published as peer-reviewed papers in open access journals. The reporting of studies involving animal research must follow the ARRIVE Guidelines 2.0. In exceptional cases, ART may partially or fully support article processing charges.
• In the spirit of the Basel Declaration and transparency in animal research, the grantee and its institution shall communicate the results of research funded by ART 3R Grants to the general public. This can be done on the institutional website, using social media and/or as part of outreach activities.
• ART has the right to revoke or suspend any grant or award if the responsible grantee/awardee fails to fulfil any of the rules and obligations listed in this guide to application and execution of the grant. In case of such violations, ART may request partial or total refund of the approved budget award.
• The grant agreement will be governed by Swiss law and be subject to jurisdiction at Swiss courts.
