ART Science Communication (SciComm) Grants aim to support young science communicators in promoting innovative communication strategies and/or creating resources and tools for promoting greater transparency on animal research.

The grant proposals are evaluated by the Animal Research Tomorrow board and will grant of up to 2 500 € for proposals starting in 2022. The deadline for submitting proposals is November 1st 2021.

The following conditions apply:

  • The submitted proposals should describe a detailed plan to deliver innovative communication approaches and/or creating resources and tools to promote positive views on – ethically responsible – animal research for the benefit of science, humans and animals.
  • ART SciComm Grants are aimed primarily at science communicators, though journalists, teachers, researchers or technicians with a passion for science communication and public outreach are welcome to apply their proposals.
  • Applicants should be no older than 35 years of age by November 1st
  • Applicants may be of any nationality and must be employed by a research or teaching institution.
  • Funding is available to cover expenses directly linked to the development of the proposed work plan, including, but not limited to, acquisition of equipment, software or services, short travel expenses, teaching materials, venue spaces and/or hosting of events. The budget cannot include institutional overheads. In exceptional and well justified cases an exception can be granted for an overhead of maximal 15%, as part of the budget. Salaries or stipends are not part of the eligible costs.
  • All deliverables from ART SciComm Grants will be made freely available via a Creative Commons License.
  • Animal Research Tomorrow requires full regard to all applicable laws and regulations regarding data security and privacy. The collection of data from human participants (text, images or videos) must be approved by a human ethics committee or equivalent local regulatory body. All data, images, videos of research involving animals used must be retrieved from duly licensed projects. Proof of the request for a license or a copy of a valid license for the proposed work plan – if applicable – must be submitted as part of the application procedure.
  • Animal Research Tomorrow must be acknowledged in all media (e.g. websites, videos, posters, presentations) produced as a result of the ART SciComm research grant.
  • It is the responsibility of the applicant to respect and abide by all local, national land/or EU laws and regulations relevant to perform the proposed work plan. The applicant has to obtain all necessary permissions and licences before the grant can be started. ART is in no case legally, financially or otherwise responsible for any expenditures or liabilities arising during execution of the project.
  • A report covering the execution, results and conclusions of the work plan must be submitted no later than 3 months after its completion.
  • Payments will be made in Euros to the institution of the project leader. A first instalment of half of the amount granted will be transferred at the beginning of the project and the second instalment will be paid after submission of an interim report.
  • Any substantial changes concerning the work plan, budget or grant agreement must be communicated in writing for approval by Animal Research Tomorrow.
  • ART has the right to revoke or suspend any grant or award if the responsible grantee/awardee fails to fulfil any of the rules and obligations listed in this guide to application and execution of the grant. In case of such violations, ART may request partial or total refund of the approved budget award.
  • The grant agreement will be governed by Swiss law and be subject to jurisdiction at Swiss courts.

The call for applications for 2021 has ended on November 1st. Other calls are expected for 2022.
