The underrepresentation of female subjects in biomedical research led to the Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV) initiative, which called for the equal inclusion of both sexes in basic and preclinical research. Yet meaningful change remains limited, largely due to insufficient training and educational resources for researchers.
In this ART Talk, Dr Ivana Jaric will introduce two key frameworks for sex-inclusive research, explaining how and why they differ, when each should be applied, and the main types of sex differences. Drawing on her own research on ovarian hormone status and female-specific vulnerability to psychiatric disorders, she will illustrate why animal research is—and should remain—essential for understanding sex differences, advancing women's health, and ultimately translating that knowledge into better medicine.
